South Huntington Nursing Home Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Supports World Meningitis Day 2014

South Huntington based Nursing Home educates the community on the dangers of the Meningitis disease and how to prevent infection.

South Huntington, NY (April 2014) This year, April 24th marks World Meningitis Day. Started by the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations, World Meningitis Day aims to raise the global profile of meningitis, emphasize the importance of vaccination, and provide support to those dealing with the symptoms of the disease. Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare recognizes the importance of educating the community on the disease and supports the CoMO in their efforts by sharing tips to avoid contracting the disease and how to respond in the worst case scenario.

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges. The meninges is the collective name for the three membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord. There are three types of meningitis: Bacterial, Viral, and Fungal. Bacterial meningitis is aggressive, develops quickly and can lead to permanent disability or death in a matter of hours. It is fatal in approximately 50% of cases and accounts for around 170,000 deaths around the world each year. The infection spreads from person to person through actions such as kissing, coughing, sneezing, sharing food or utensils. Children who attend daycare or preschool are at greater risk of contracting bacterial meningitis.

Viral meningitis is the most common but least severe and many patients recover without any permanent damage. Fungal meningitis causes severe infections but occurs much less frequently. It is not contagious and spreads by inhaling fungal spores from the environment.

Meningitis can be difficult to identify early on in infection. The main signs of contracting the disease are similar to the common cold and develop quickly over the course of just a few hours. Look for symptoms such as vomiting, drowsiness, stiff neck, light sensitivity, and headache as well as altered consciousness. The best way to prevent bacterial meningitis is through vaccination. Vaccines prepare the immune system by exposing the body to a germ so that it is better able to fight an infection when it occurs. The vaccines available protect against all three major causes of bacterial meningitis.

“Meningitis is a dangerous and fatal disease. People should be educated on its potential dangers and learn how to prevent infection, not just for their health, but for the health of future generations. Since the geriatric population is at high risk, we must do our best as a care center to spread awareness, not germs,” said Ari Silberstein of Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

March 2014

South Huntington Nursing Home Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Highlights its Outstanding Dietary Department During March National Nutrition Month

South Huntington area nursing home Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare supports March National Nutrition Month

South Huntington, NY (March 2014) March is National Nutrition Month, an observance that is widely overlooked, yet universally important to every member of our society. As people age, nutrition becomes more important to overall health, especially in regards to the elderly population. Proper diet and nutrition helps elderly individuals keep their minds sharp and alert, while also increasing energy. However, the elderly have different needs than the rest of the population, which is why Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare of South Huntington, New York, would like to share helpful tips about maintaining a healthy diet after the age of 50.

Use less salt! Reduce your sodium intake to reduce water retention and high blood pressure.

Eat good fats! Avocados, olive oil, walnuts, and salmon are all examples of “good fats” that can protect you from bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol.

Go fiber! Fiber is a crucial part of a nutritional diet, as it reduces constipation, lowers your risk of chronic disease, and helps you feel more full when eating.

Eat more veggies! The best way to prepare vegetables is by steaming or sautéing them in olive oil. Olive oil preserves nutrients and is a great example of the good fats doctors recommend.

Diversify your plate! A helpful tip from Japanese food culture is to include five colors on your plate. Fruits and veggies rich in color correspond to rich nutrients (blackberries, melons, yams, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini).

“Our dietary department is a crucial aspect of our operations here at Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare and we take great pride in the food we make here. We understand that many health issues our residents encounter can potentially be avoided with the right diet. Our dietary department is superb, and works with every resident individually to create personalized nutrition plans. This being Nutrition Month, we salute the work they do and thank them for it,” said Ari Silberstein, Administrator at Apex.

January 2014

Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Supports Blood Donation during January Blood Donor Month

South Huntington based Nursing Home Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare urges members of the community to donate blood during Blood Donor Month.

South Huntington (January 2014) Every year, millions of people donate blood to help others in times of emergency, often for many different reasons. Some donate for a relative or a friend in need, others just for the satisfaction of helping others. The month of January, designated as Blood Donor Month, is particularly important for donations due to the frequency of winter weather accidents and injuries.

An estimated 41,000 blood donations are needed every day and while that goal may not be reached, there are enough people eligible to donate to fill it. This is why Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare encourages members of the community to participate in blood drives this month. The Red Cross is facing a blood shortage, a dangerous situation to be in when someone in the US is in need of blood every two seconds.

When deciding to give blood, one should follow these simple steps for the best experience. First, when giving blood, it is possible to become dizzy from a drop in your blood sugar. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice the night and morning before a donation and avoid dehydrating caffeinated beverages. Having food in your stomach also helps decrease light headedness, so it is advised to eat three hours before donation. During your donation, remember to relax. Bring a calming playlist or a book, something that only requires one hand to use. Finally, after your donation, be sure to have a meal high in protein to help your body replenish your blood supply. Remember to steer clear of alcoholic beverages for at least 8 hours post donation.

“Apex is proud to do all it can in support of the efforts of the Red Cross this month. Blood shortages can have a huge impact on many people not just in our community, but across the country as a whole. We're encouraging anyone who is eligible to go out and give blood at least once to help save lives,” stated Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Administrator Ari Silberstein.

South Huntington, NY (January 2014) Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare proudly celebrates the birthday of centennial resident Ethel Weber on Friday, January 10th at its South Huntington, New York location. Joan Weber, daughter of Ethel Weber, works as a home health aide in a nearby New Jersey facility. She was excited to make the trip to South Huntington to celebrate alongside the Apex Rehab staff on January 10th. “We are truly blessed that Mama has lived so long, as she is the cornerstone of our family. I would like to thank the Apex staff for all their caring and dedication in creating a clean and relaxing environment where Mama is surrounded by loving faces and joyous moments all the time,” said the 46-year old home health aide. In addition to Joan, 14 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren call Ethel Weber “Mama”.

Ms. Weber, a resident of Queens for much of her life, has always been very active, athletic and surprisingly fashionable. For many years, she participated in a troupe called Sweet Adelines, a group of seniors that sang and danced for their peers at senior centers and nursing homes across the city. Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Honors Human Rights Day 2013

South Huntington Based Nursing Home Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Supports the Rights of its Residents and Staff in All Aspects of Operation

South Huntington, NY (December 2013) Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare is proud to support the spirit of Human Rights Day on December 10th, 2013. Human rights, particularly the rights of their residents, are the number one priority in all aspects of operation at Apex. The administration believes that care facilities cannot operate based on the bottom line, instead basing their care on the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. To that effect, all residents are treated as individuals, with different likes and tastes, and are given the personalized care they need to live happily and comfortably.

Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare has a strict no discrimination policy when it comes to their hiring and admissions processes, ensuring the rights of every individual are respected and ensured. Applicants for employment or admission are never discriminated against based on their age, race, gender, religion, disability or orientation.

“Making sure our residents are happy and secure is what we strive for here at Apex. The key to that is respect and not infringing on the rights of anyone in any way. From the time they enter through our doors to the moment they leave, we want our residents to feel as safe, happy and empowered as possible, and it shows,” remarked Ari Silberstein, Administrator at Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Celebrates as Thanksgiving and Hanukkah Share the Stage in 2013

South Huntington Based Nursing Home Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare Celebrates Thanksgiving and Hanukkah with Festive Programs Designed to Bring Families Together

South Huntington, NY (November 2013) The fall season is home to a cluster of cherished holidays, with families across the country coming together for food, family and building memories. This year, two of these beloved holidays meet again for the first time in 125 years, oprening the door for a once in a lifetime holiday experience that will be remembered for years to come.

Thanksgiving, celebrated traditionally in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November, was declared a national holiday by President Lincoln in 1863. With it's own culture of food and togetherness, families and communities have come together for this honored tradition since the pilgrims sat with the Native Americans.

This year, Thanksgiving will share the stage with the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. A much older holiday than Thanksgiving, Hanukkah lasts for eight days and celebrates the successful rebellion of the Maccabees against Antiochus IV Epiphanes, after which the candles of the temple burned for eight days on a one day supply. Like Thanksgiving, Hanukkah has its own cultural and traditional foods.

“We are very excited about the joint celebration of Thanksgiving and the first day of Hanukkah. This is surely a once in a lifetime event and we hope that families and friends all over take advantage of the festivities. It is also the perfect chance to spend the holiday with our residents, who are also very much looking forward to the celebrations and programs we have planned that day for them and their families,” said Ari Silberstein, Administrator at Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

To commemorate this historic event, Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare is hosting programs and events that reflect the festive nature of the day. Traditional games will be played, accompanied by traditional stories and followed by a meal made up of innovative combinations of signature dishes from both holidays. Family, friends, and loved ones are encouraged to join in on the festivities and to contribute to the spirit of community enhanced by the arrival of the holidays.
