Speech Therapy Using VitalStim®
As a facility that provides short-term rehabilitation services to the members of our community, Apex Rehabilitation and Healthcare continuously looks for products and services that can help improve our residents' quality of life.
Apex recently purchased the VitalStim® system for use by our Speech Therapists. Jane Turk, MA, CCC-SLP, a Speech Therapist at Apex, noted that every resident admitted is being evaluated for an opportunity to improve their quality of life through VitalStim® Therapy.
How It's Used
VitalStim® is being used at Apex to treat swallowing difficulty in residents with stroke, those with age-related swallowing difficulties, and those with swallowing difficulties resulting from head or brain injuries. Jane has seen improvement for those on VitalStim® Therapy.
Some residents needing to drink thickened fluids to help prevent choking have been able to go back to drinking regular liquids. VitalStim® Therapy has also helped some residents tolerate regular menu items and may enable retraining that could eliminate the need for tube feeding in some residents.
