The Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home observes this year’s Human Rights Day. Human Rights issues has been a subject that nations have struggled over for a long time. While, international and domestic laws have evolved to promote the betterment of all mankind, there is still a long way to go to ensure equal rights for all people. As the fight for the establishment and maintenance of human rights continue, many brave men and women will continue their work to make a difference for those whose human rights are violated.
Famous human rights activists:
-
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865): Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was in office during the American Civil War. He fought to keep the country from splitting apart, while establishing the basic human right of self-determination. His Emancipation Proclamation was one of the first official declarations condemning slavery. His efforts led to the end of slavery in 1865.
-
Frederick Douglas (1818-1895): Douglas was a former slave who was taught how to read by his master’s wife. After a failed escape attempt, Douglas finally gained his freedom in 1938 when he ran to New York. He became involved in anti-slavery campaigns and travelled across the United States giving speeches on human rights.
-
Susan B. Anthony: Anthony was a dedicated suffragist and civil rights activist. Together with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, she co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association. She is credited with playing a notable role in passing the nineteenth amendment which gave women the right to vote.
“Here at the Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home, we are proud to commemorate Human Rights Day. Over the centuries, mankind has come a long way in promoting human rights with the abolishment of slavery and laws protecting women’s rights. However, there is still work needed, both here and abroad, to help establish and protect basic human rights,” says Marty Dicker, administrator at the Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

The Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home promotes diabetes awareness this month. It is important that people diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes learn how to re –evaluate their current lifestyles in order to manage the disease. Diabetics should try to incorporate healthy carbohydrates into their diet such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products. Also, fiber rich foods can help regulate blood glucose levels and minimize the risk of heart disease. Fiber rich foods include beans, fruits, vegetables, and wheat bran. Furthermore, it is important to limit trans-fat intake. Olive and canola oils are healthy alternatives.
However, these oils should be consumed in moderation since they contain many calories. Since diabetes can contribute the hardening and clogging of arteries, there is increasing risk of heart disease and stroke. Therefore, it is important limit high fat products and sodium intake.
Creating a food plan is an important step in controlling diabetes. People diagnosed with diabetes should meet with a dietitian. With the help of a dietitian, a diabetic can create a meal plan that best fits his needs and lifestyle. It is important to follow a planned diet to help prevent diabetes related complications. There are also other benefits of following a food plan such as reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and low bone mass.
“Here at the Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home, we encourage people to seriously consider the consequences of their food choices and sedentary lifestyle have on their health. It is important that we all try to incorporate a healthy food plan into our daily lives and to remain physically active. With these changes, we can lower the number of diabetes cases in the United States,” says Marty Dicker, administrator at the Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home is involved in promoting Breast Cancer Awareness Month and providing important information to help awareness of breast cancer. Extensive research has shown that there are many genetic and environmental risk factors involved in breast cancer incidence.
Genetic risk factors include:
-
Mutated genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2. An abnormal mutation of these proteins prevent the cells from inhibiting the growth of abnormal cells.
-
A person with a family history of breast cancer is at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. If a person has a close relative who has or had breast cancer, regardless if the relative is male or female, he or she should discuss screening methods with his or her medical provider.
-
Race and ethnicity can also effect the risk of breast cancer. A white American woman is at a higher risk of developing breast cancer than African American, Asian American, and Hispanic American women.
Lifestyle factors include:
-
Drinking alcohol can increase the chances of developing breast cancer. In addition to breast cancer, too much alcohol consumption can increase the risk of getting other forms of cancers.
-
Exercise can reduce the chances of developing breast cancer.
“The Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home family is committed to raise breast cancer awareness this month. Breast cancer is a devastating disease that can be detected early if the right measures are taken. We ask everyone to take into consideration the factors of breast cancer that can be controlled or reduced,” says Marty Dicker, administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Celebrates Back To School with Helpful Tips for Parents
Brooklyn, NY based skilled nursing facility Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home prepares parents for back to school by sharing helpful tips for students to make the most of their school year.
As this beautiful summer comes to an end it only means one thing, back to school. Since the school year is right around the corner, everyone is preparing for that first day of school. There are many objectives, such as traveling to and from school, bullying, food for school, before and after school child care and developing good homework and studying habits. Parents need to know how exactly to take care of them in a timely, organized and economical manner.
In order to be completely ready for this approaching school year, Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home would like to share some back to school tips for parents this year.
-
Remind your child that there are probably a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. This may be at any age. Teachers know that students are nervous and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.
-
Children should always board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building.
-
Most schools regularly send schedules of cafeteria menus home and/or have them posted on the school's website. With this advance information, you can plan on packing lunch on the days when the main course is one your child prefers not to eat.
-
If you choose a commercial after-school program, inquire about the training of the staff. There should be a high staff-to-child ratio, and the rooms and the playground should be safe.
-
Some children need help organizing their homework. Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems.
"Back to school is an exciting time in our community and we want to make sure every parent and their child are ready for another year of learning, growth, and development,” remarked Marty Dicker, the Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home of Linden Boulevard Spreads the Word About National Immunization Month This August
Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home, a Brooklyn, New York based nursing home, helps spread awareness about the importance of promoting vaccines and staying up to date with shots this summer and year round.
Brooklyn, NY (August 2014) With August being National Immunization Month, Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home would like to remind the public how vital it is to stay current with the proper vaccines and shots as required by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). This is even more critical for our nation’s seniors, who are unfortunately at a higher risk of receiving communicable diseases.
For this reason Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home of Linden Boulevard recommends everyone receive the flu shot and other vaccines against serious diseases such as measles and tuberculosis.
It is important to talk to friends and family and spread the word about the importance of immunizations. Many assume that vaccines are only for kids, while nothing can be further from the truth. Adults 65 and older need to get a special shot to prevent pneumonia.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Provides Senior Safety Tips For Summer to the Community
Brooklyn, NY based Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home lists vital summer safety tips for senior citizens to stay safe in the heat.
Brooklyn, NY (June 2014) - During the month of June, Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home observes National Safety Month and encourages others to raise awareness about crucial safety issues facing seniors in the summertime. By educating the community, Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home aims to reduce the risk of heat stroke and other injuries and illnesses amongst the senior citizen population in the hot summer weather.
With the sunny summer months approaching, many community seniors face the risk of heat-induced illness such as sunburn, dehydration and heat exhaustion/stroke. Keeping this in mind, Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home offers a list of important rules to always keep in mind to stay healthy in the heat.
· Try to remain indoors with the air conditioning on. If the temperature is in the 90s or higher and you don’t have an air conditioner, go somewhere that has one, such as a shopping mall, library, senior center or movie theater. Fans can’t provide enough cooling in such heat.
· If you need to go outdoors, always wear sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 15.
· Save your daily walk or outdoor activities for when the weather is cooler, such as when the sun is going down or before it comes up.
· Drink lots of cold water, clear juices and other liquids that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine as these two can easily dehydrate you.
· Beware of heat stroke. Signs of heat stroke include an altered mental state, not sweating and nausea. If you see someone displaying these symptoms, seek medical care immediately.
“With summer temperatures rising, try to plan for inside activities. If you need to be outside, aim for times of the day when temperatures are not extreme. Additionally drink plenty of liquids and continuously replenish yourself. Heat related illnesses can be very extreme, yet they are relatively easy to avoid,” commented Marty Dicker, Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Supports ALS Awareness Month in May 2014
Brooklyn, NY based nursing home Brooklyn Queens honors those living with "Lou Gehrig's Disease”
Brooklyn, NY (May 2014) During the month of May, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) recognizes those living with ALS in support of National Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (or ALS) Awareness Month. A number of month-long programs and initiatives are underway to heighten public awareness of ALS and to inform the ALS community of the services, support and research available from the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
ALS, often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons from the brain reach to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
The ALS Association promotes knowledge of the disease and resources for those suffering. ALS is not contagious, but could strike anyone, regardless of race, economic standing, or geographic location. On average, 15 new cases of ALS are diagnosed every day; more than 5,000 per year. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis. However, with advances in research and medical care many patients are living longer lives with more productivity. For more information about what you can do to support ALS research, visit www.alsa.org.
“ALS is a devastating illness for patients and their loved ones. The cause of ALS is still unknown and while there is no cure, there is hope. With support from our communities, dedicated researchers are working toward putting an end to this terrible disease. We urge everyone to take time and learn about what you can do to help,” said Marty Dicker, the administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn, NY (May 2014) This year, starting on Mother's Day, the week of May 11-17 marks National Nursing Home Week. The American Health Care Association (AHCA) established National Nursing Home Week in 1967, which gives the opportunity for nursing homes around the country to celebrate the many contributions of their staff and residents. Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Supports World Meningitis Day 2014
Brooklyn, NY based Nursing Home educates the community on the dangers of the Meningitis disease and how to prevent infection.
Brooklyn, NY (April 2014) This year, April 24th marks World Meningitis Day. Started by the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations, World Meningitis Day aims to raise the global profile of meningitis, emphasize the importance of vaccination, and provide support to those dealing with the symptoms of the disease. Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home recognizes the importance of educating the community on the disease and supports the CoMO in their efforts by sharing tips to avoid contracting the disease and how to respond in the worst case scenario.
Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges. The meninges is the collective name for the three membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord. There are three types of meningitis: Bacterial, Viral, and Fungal. Bacterial meningitis is aggressive, develops quickly and can lead to permanent disability or death in a matter of hours. It is fatal in approximately 50% of cases and accounts for around 170,000 deaths around the world each year. The infection spreads from person to person through actions such as kissing, coughing, sneezing, sharing food or utensils. Children who attend daycare or preschool are at greater risk of contracting bacterial meningitis.
Viral meningitis is the most common but least severe and many patients recover without any permanent damage. Fungal meningitis causes severe infections but occurs much less frequently. It is not contagious and spreads by inhaling fungal spores from the environment.
Meningitis can be difficult to identify early on in infection. The main signs of contracting the disease are similar to the common cold and develop quickly over the course of just a few hours. Look for symptoms such as vomiting, drowsiness, stiff neck, light sensitivity, and headache as well as altered consciousness. The best way to prevent bacterial meningitis is through vaccination. Vaccines prepare the immune system by exposing the body to a germ so that it is better able to fight an infection when it occurs. The vaccines available protect against all three major causes of bacterial meningitis.
“Meningitis is a dangerous and fatal disease. People should be educated on its potential dangers and learn how to prevent infection, not just for their health, but for the health of future generations. Since the geriatric population is at high risk, we must do our best as a care center to spread awareness, not germs,” said Marty Dicker, Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Highlights its Outstanding Dietary Department During March National Nutrition Month
Brooklyn area nursing Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home supports March National Nutrition Month
Brooklyn, NY (March 2014) March is National Nutrition Month, an observance that is widely overlooked, yet universally important to every member of our society. As people age, nutrition becomes more important to overall health, especially in regards to the elderly population. Proper diet and nutrition helps elderly individuals keep their minds sharp and alert, while also increasing energy. However, the elderly have different needs than the rest of the population, which is why Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home of Brooklyn, New York, would like to share helpful tips about maintaining a healthy diet after the age of 50.
Use less salt! Reduce your sodium intake to reduce water retention and high blood pressure
Eat good fats! Avocados, olive oil, walnuts, and salmon are allexamples of “good fats” that can protect you from bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol.
Go fiber! Fiber is a crucial part of a nutritional diet, as it reduces constipation, lowers your risk of chronic disease, and helps you feel more full when eating.
Eat more veggies! The best way to prepare vegetables is by steaming or sautéing them in olive oil. Olive oil preserves nutrients and is a great example of the good fats doctors recommend.
Diversify your plate! A helpful tip from Japanese food culture is to include five colors on your plate. Fruits and veggies rich in color correspond to rich nutrients (blackberries, melons, yams, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini).
“Our dietary department is a vital aspect of our operations here at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home and we take great pride in the food we make here. We understand that many health issues our residents encounter can potentially be avoided with the right diet. Our dietary department is superb, and works with every resident individually to create personalized nutrition plans. This being Nutrition Month, we salute the work they do and thank them for it,” said Marty Dicker, the Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Shares Easy Ways To Go Green At Home
Brooklyn based nursing home invites the community to go green this March for Earth Day
Brooklyn, NY (March 2014) In today's society, there is a strong concern for preserving the planet and it's resources from overuse. Protecting land, environments, and ecosystems across the globe have become key initiatives for businesses and people all over the world. This is why Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home hopes to educate and encourage the community to participate in going Green this March to honor Earth Day on March 20th 2014. Green initiatives are simple to start in your own home or business and are often more cost effective than traditional practices, which can be more wasteful.
Small changes in lifestyle at home can greatly affect our immediate and global environment, such as reducing landfill waste, airborne toxins and fumes, and preserving natural reserves. Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home shares five tips on going green at home, and calls on residents and members of the community to band together for greener and cleaner neighborhoods. To get involved, adopt some of these simple practices to make a positive green imprint on your community.
1. Give up disposable bags! Paper or plastic? Bring your own. Reusable grocery bags help to cut down on the amount of trees cut down to make paper bags and the amount of non-biodegradable materials from plastic bags.
2. Turn off your computer completely at night, instead of letting it overcharge. This will save on your energy bill, while also preserving your battery's lifetime.
3. Before making that new item purchase, do the research to see if it's something you could find from a yard sale or consignment shop, cutting down on landfill waste.
4. Replace one meal a week with a vegetarian option. Not only is it healthy for you, it saves hundreds of gallons of water (it takes 100 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of ground beef)!
5. Introduce houseplants to your home. They increase oxygen circulation and bring peaceful energy to a space. “We're so fortunate to be in Brooklyn where so many green initiatives are already underway, and we are proud to join the cause,” said Marty Dicker, the Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home. “The planet is the most important resource we have. It's our home above all else so we have to take care of it."

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Provides Tips for Successful Blood Donation during January Blood Donor Month
Brooklyn based nursing home urges members of the community to donate blood during Blood Donor Month
Brooklyn, NY (January 2014) Every year, millions of people donate blood to help others in times of emergency, often for differing reasons. Some donate for a relative or a friend in need, others just for the satisfaction of helping another. The month of January, designated as Blood Donor Month, is particularly important for donations due to the frequency of winter weather accidents and injuries.
An estimated 41,000 blood donations are needed every day and while that goal may not be reached, there are enough people eligible to donate to fill it. This is why Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home encourages members of the community to participate in blood drives this month. The Red Cross is facing a blood shortage, a dangerous status when someone in the US is in need of blood every two seconds.
When deciding to give blood, one should follow these simple for the optimal donation experience. First, when giving blood, it is very possible to become dizzy from a drop in blood sugar. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice the night and morning before a donation and avoid dehydrating caffeinated beverages. Having food in your stomach also helps decrease light headedness, so it is advised to eat three hours before donation. During your donation, remember to relax. Bring a calming playlist or a book, something that only requires one hand to use. Finally, after your donation, be sure to have a meal high in protein to help your body replenish your blood supply. Remember to steer clear of alcoholic beverages for at least 8 hours post donation.
“Brooklyn Queens is proud to support the efforts of the Red Cross this month. Blood shortages have an enormous impact on all of us, not only in our specific communities but across our nation as a whole. We're actively encouraging anyone who is eligible to go out and donate blood at least once to help save lives,” said Marty Dicker, Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Acknowledges Human Rights Day 2013
Brooklyn Based Nursing Home Brooklyn Queens Supports the Rights of its Residents and Staff in All Aspects of Operation
Brooklyn, NY (December 2013) Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home is proud to support the spirit of Human Rights Day on December 10th, 2013. Taking place during the busy holiday season that dominates the month of December, Human Rights Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on December 10th, 1948.
Human rights and the rights of its residents in particular, are of critical importance to the Brooklyn Queens family. The administration firmly believes that care facilities cannot operate based on the bottom line, and instead need to follow the cardinal rule of: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. To that point, all residents are treated as individuals, with different likes and tastes, and are given the customized care they need to live serenely and appropriately.
Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home has adopted a strict no discrimination policy when it comes to their hiring and admissions processes, ensuring the rights of every individual are respected and ensured. Applicants for employment or admission are never discriminated against in any way based on their age, race, gender, religion, disability or orientation.
“Here at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home we take great pride in providing our residents a place where they can receive the care they need without infringing on their freedoms in any way. It is incredibly important to us that they know and exercise their rights and liberties, keeping them and our staff happy in a friendly and nurturing environment,” said Marty Dicker, Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.

Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home Celebrates as Thanksgiving and Hannuka Share the Stage For First Time in 125 Years
Brooklyn, NY (November 2013) People from all over the country look forward to the winter holiday season all year round. This year things are a little different with both Hannukah and Thanksgiving being celebrated on the same day.
The celebration of both Hannukah and Thanksgiving on the same day is a unique occasion. This is the first time this has happened in over 100 years, taking place last in 1888. Each holiday celebrates an event that occurred in totally different time periods; Hannukah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the defeat of King Antiochus by the Maccabees in the time of the holy Temple in Jerusalem while Thanksgiving celebrates the peace made between the Pilgrims and Native Americans in colonial America.
Despite their many differences, both Thanksgiving and Hannukah are holidays that bring together friends, family and community. Each holiday is celebrated with its own traditional meals and activities that make this year's dual celebration one to be remembered by those young and old.
“Here at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home, our residents and staff love the holidays. This dual celebration is not only a chance to bring together family and friends, but to invite those who may not know the history of Hanukkah or of Thanksgiving to learn about them and witness beautiful traditions that take place during those times,” said Marty Dicker, Administrator at Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home.
To commemorate this historic event, Brooklyn Queens Nursing Home is hosting programs and events that reflect the festive nature of the day. Traditional games will be played, accompanied by traditional storytelling and followed by a meal made up of innovative combinations of signature dishes from both holidays. Family, friends, and loved ones are encouraged to join in on the festivities and to contribute to the spirit of community enhanced by the arrival of the holidays.
