December 2014
Beach Terrace Care Center proudly celebrates Human Rights Day. In 1950, the United Nations General Assembly declared December 10 as Human Rights Day. This holiday was created to raise international awareness about the undisputable rights and protection that all humans are entitled to. On December 10, 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was accepted by the United Nations and is considered to be the first doctrine on the promotion for the preservation and maintenance of human rights. This declaration has pathed the way for future human right bills and laws.
“Promoting human rights is one of the core purposes of the United Nations, and the Organization has pursued this mission since its founding. Then, as now, the key to success is the political will of Member States. It is States, in the first instance, that are obliged to protect human rights and prevent violations at a national level, and to stand up when other States fail to live up to their commitments. This is not always easy, and over the past 20 years we have seen genocide and many other appalling and large-scale violations of international human rights and humanitarian law,” stated Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General in 2013.
“Here at Beach Terrace Care Center, we believe that human rights is one of the noblest causes. It is our duty, as denizens of this earth, to strive to establish and protect equals rights and protection to all of mankind,” Martin Zwick, administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

This month Beach Terrace Care center helps promote awareness of breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the staff at Beach Terrace Care Center, educating the public on this important issue is a priority.
Many people want to know what impact National Breast Cancer Awareness Month can have on their lives. The truth is that Breast Cancer Awareness Month can make a huge difference in many people’s lives, regardless if they are diagnosed with breast cancer. This month offers the opportunity to spread important information about the steps women can take to help discover breast cancer in its early stages.
Here are a few ideas that anyone, regardless of age, gender, or diagnosis can do to help raise awareness:
-Ask doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to speak to women about the significance of getting tested for breast cancer.
-Organize a communal breast cancer awareness talk in your neighborhood for women to become educated on the dangers involved and the importance of stay up-to-date with breast cancer research and information.
“Here at Beach Terrace Care Center, we would like to emphasize on everyone, especially women above forty years old, the importance of staying current on your mammograms and other breast cancer screening tests. Please talk to your medical provider about breast cancer and what you can do to detect it early,” says Martin Zwick, administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

Beach Terrace Care Center provides you with important back to school tips.
Beach Terrace Care Center is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center shares back to school tips for this upcoming year with the community.
As this beautiful summer comes to an end it only means one thing, back to school. Since the school year is right around the corner, everyone is preparing for that first day of school. There are many objectives, such as traveling to and from school, bullying, food for school, before and after school child care and developing good homework and studying habits. Parents need to know how exactly to take care of them in a timely, organized and economical manner.
In order to be completely ready for this approaching school year, Beach Terrace Care Center would like to share some back to school tips for parents this year.
-
Remind your child that there are probably a lot of students who are uneasy about the first day of school. This may be at any age. Teachers know that students are nervous and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible.
-
Children should always board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building.
-
Most schools regularly send schedules of cafeteria menus home and/or have them posted on the school's website. With this advance information, you can plan on packing lunch on the days when the main course is one your child prefers not to eat.
-
If you choose a commercial after-school program, inquire about the training of the staff. There should be a high staff-to-child ratio, and the rooms and the playground should be safe.
-
Take steps to help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while studying. It may be helpful to close the books for a few minutes, stretch, and take a break periodically when it will not be too disruptive.
"Back to school is one of the most important times of the year. We want to make sure parents and students are prepared for the upcoming year, giving young minds ample room to grow and develop into our future leaders,” said Martin Zwick, the Administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

Long Beach, NY (August 2014) With August being National Immunization Month, Beach Terrace Care Center would like to remind the public how vital it is to stay current with the proper vaccines and shots as required by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). This is even more critical for our nation’s seniors, who are unfortunately at a higher risk of receiving communicable diseases.
For this reason Beach Terrace Care Center, Long Beach's premier nursing home, recommends everyone receive the flu shot and other vaccines against serious diseases such as measles and tuberculosis.
It is important to talk to friends and family and spread the word about the importance of immunizations. Many assume that vaccines are only for kids, while nothing can be further from the truth. Adults 65 and older need to get a special shot to prevent pneumonia.

Long Beach, NY Nursing Home Beach Terrace Care Center Supplies the Community with Senior Safety Tips For Summer
Long Beach, NY based Beach Terrace Care Center provides vital summer safety tips for senior citizens in Long Beach.
Long Beach, NY (June 2014) - Beach Terrace Care Center encourages the community to raise awareness about crucial safety issues facing seniors in the summertime. Through education, Beach Terrace Care Center aims to reduce the risk of heat stroke and other injuries and illnesses among the senior citizen population in the hot summer weather.
With the sunny summer months approaching, many community seniors face the risk of heat-induced illness such as sunburn, dehydration and heat exhaustion/stroke. Keeping this in mind, Beach Terrace Care Center offers a list of important rules to always keep in mind to stay healthy in the heat.
· If you need to go outdoors, always wear sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 15.
· Drink lots of cold water, clear juices and other liquids that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine as these two can easily dehydrate you.
· Try to remain indoors with the air conditioning on. If the temperature is in the 90s or higher and you don’t have an air conditioner, go somewhere that has one, such as a shopping mall, library, senior center or movie theater. Fans can’t provide enough cooling in such heat.
· Beware of heat stroke. Signs of heat stroke include an altered mental state, not sweating and nausea. If you see someone displaying these symptoms, seek medical care immediately.
· Wear loose, light-colored clothes and a wide-brimmed hat to keep your head and face cool. This will also provide added protection from damaging sun exposure. A hat should protect the neck, face and ears, helping you both stay cool and avoid sunburn. Being sunburned can also make it harder for your body to cool off.
“With potentially extreme temperatures on the horizon it is very important to keep in mind these safety precautions. Here at Beach Terrace Care Center we take weather concerns very seriously as they are crucial to the well-being of our community", said Martin Zwick, administrator.

Long Beach, NY Nursing Home Beach Terrace Care Center Observes Aphasia Awareness Month in June 2014
Long Beach, NY based Beach Terrace Care Center helps spread community awareness about aphasia
Long Beach, NY (June 2014) - During the month of June, the National Aphasia Association (NAA) supports Aphasia Awareness Month in support for those living with aphasia. Being that Aphasia primarily affects the elderly, Beach Terrace Care Center is proud to help community efforts in raising awareness to numerous initiatives and programs that educate the public about aphasia and its effects.
Aphasia is a language disorder usually initiated by a stroke, causing one to begin having difficulty remembering words, lose the ability to speak, read and write. While aphasia is most common among older individuals it can affect people of all ages and genders. Aphasia can take on many different forms, and can cause one to lose the ability to communicate, or to forget certain words or names. A full recovery from aphasia is possible in some cases, though if the symptoms last longer than 2 months after the initial stroke a complete recovery is unlikely.
Throughout June the NAA will teach the public techniques on how to communicate with those affected by aphasia in addition to bringing the issue to national attention. Currently about one million Americans are affected, with those numbers increasing rapidly. Over 200,000 develop the destructive disorder every year. Aphasia is more common than Parkinson's disease and cerebral palsy, and yet most people have never heard of it. For more information and to learn what you can do to support Aphasia, visit www.aphasia.org
“Aphasia is a widespread disorder yet it is relatively unknown. We therefore need to educate the public on the impact it has on the elderly and to raise awareness on how best to deal with it,” said Martin Zwick, Administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

Long Beach, NY Nursing Home Beach Terrace Care Center Supports ALS Awareness Month in May 2014
Long Beach, NY based nursing home Beach Terrace Care Center honors those living with "Lou Gehrig's Disease”
Long Beach, NY (May 2014) During the month of May, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) recognizes those living with ALS in support of National Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (or ALS) Awareness Month. A number of month-long programs and initiatives are underway to heighten public awareness of ALS and to inform the ALS community of the services, support and research available from the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
ALS, often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons from the brain reach to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
The ALS Association promotes knowledge of the disease and resources for those suffering. ALS is not contagious, but could happen to anyone, regardless of race, economic standing, or geographic location. On average, 15 new cases of ALS are diagnosed every day, more than 5,000 per year. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from the time of diagnosis. However, with advances in research and medical care many patients are living longer lives with more productivity. For more information about what you can do to support ALS research, visit www.alsa.org.
“ALS is a devastating illness for patients and their loved ones. The cause of ALS is still unknown and while there is no cure, there is hope. With support from our communities, dedicated researchers are working toward putting an end to this terrible disease. We urge everyone to take time and learn about what you can do to help,” said Martin Zwick, the administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

Long Beach, NY Nursing Beach Terrace Care Center Supports World Meningitis Day 2014
Long Beach, NY based Nursing Home educates the community on the dangers of the Meningitis disease and how to prevent infection.
Long Beach, NY (April 2014) This year, April 24th marks World Meningitis Day. Started by the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations, World Meningitis Day aims to raise the global profile of meningitis, emphasize the importance of vaccination, and provide support to those dealing with the symptoms of the disease. Beach Terrace Care Center recognizes the importance of educating the community on the disease and supports the CoMO in their efforts by sharing tips to avoid contracting the disease and how to respond in the worst case scenario.
Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges. The meninges is the collective name for the three membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord. There are three types of meningitis: Bacterial, Viral, and Fungal. Bacterial meningitis is aggressive, develops quickly and can lead to permanent disability or death in a matter of hours. It is fatal in approximately 50% of cases and accounts for around 170,000 deaths around the world each year. The infection spreads from person to person through actions such as kissing, coughing, sneezing, sharing food or utensils. Children who attend daycare or preschool are at greater risk of contracting bacterial meningitis.
Viral meningitis is the most common but least severe and many patients recover without any permanent damage. Fungal meningitis causes severe infections but occurs much less frequently. It is not contagious and spreads by inhaling fungal spores from the environment.
Meningitis can be difficult to identify early on in infection. The main signs of contracting the disease are similar to the common cold and develop quickly over the course of just a few hours. Look for symptoms such as vomiting, drowsiness, stiff neck, light sensitivity, and headache as well as altered consciousness. The best way to prevent bacterial meningitis is through vaccination. Vaccines prepare the immune system by exposing the body to a germ so that it is better able to fight an infection when it occurs. The vaccines available protect against all three major causes of bacterial meningitis.
“Meningitis is a dangerous and fatal disease. People should be educated on its potential dangers and learn how to prevent infection, not just for their health, but for the health of future generations. Since the geriatric population is at high risk, we must do our best as a care center to spread awareness, not germs,” remarked Martin Zwick, Administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

Beach Terrace Care Center Highlights its Outstanding Dietary Department During March National Nutrition Month
Long Beach area nursing home Beach Terrace Care Center supports March National Nutrition Month
Long Beach, NY (March 2014) March is National Nutrition Month, an observance that is widely overlooked, yet universally important to every member of our society. As people age, nutrition becomes more important to overall health, especially in regards to the elderly population. Proper diet and nutrition helps elderly individuals keep their minds sharp and alert, while also increasing energy. However, the elderly have different needs than the rest of the population, which is why Beach Terrace Care Center of Long Beach, New York, would like to share helpful tips about maintaining a healthy diet after the age of 50.
Use less salt! Reduce your sodium intake to reduce water retention and high blood pressure.
Eat good fats! Avocados, olive oil, walnuts, and salmon are all examples of “good fats” that can protect you from bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol.
Go fiber! Fiber is a crucial part of a nutritional diet, as it reduces constipation, lowers your risk of chronic disease, and helps you feel more full when eating.
Eat more veggies! The best way to prepare vegetables is by steaming or sautéing them in olive oil. Olive oil preserves nutrients and is a great example of the good fats doctors recommend.
Diversify your plate! A helpful tip from Japanese food culture is to include five colors on your plate. Fruits and veggies rich in color correspond to rich nutrients (blackberries, melons, yams, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini).
“Our dietary department is a crucial aspect of our operations here at Beach Terrace Care Center and we take great pride in the food we make here. We understand that many health issues our residents encounter can potentially be avoided with the right diet. Our dietary department is superb, and works with every resident individually to create personalized nutrition plans. This being Nutrition Month, we salute the work they do and thank them for it,” said Martin Zwick, Administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center.

- Give up disposable bags! Paper or plastic? Bring your own. Reusable grocery bags help to reduce the amount of trees cut down to make paper bags and the amount of non-biodegradable materials from plastic bags.
- Turn off your computer completely at night, instead of letting it overcharge. This will save on your energy bill, while also preserving your battery's lifetime.
- Before making that new item purchase, do the research to see if it's something you could find from a yard sale or consignment shop, which cuts down on landfill waste.
- Replace one meal a week with a vegetarian option. Not only is it healthy for you, it saves hundreds of gallons of water (it takes 100 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of ground beef)!
- Introduce houseplants to your home. They increase oxygen circulation and bring peaceful energy to a space.
“We're so fortunate to be in New York, a place where many green initiatives are already underway, and we at Beach Terrace are proud to join the cause,” said Martin Zwick, Administrator at Beach Terrace Care Center. “The planet is the most important resource we have. It's our home above all else and we must take care of it.”

January 2014
Beach Terrace Care Center Backs Blood Donation during January Blood Donor Month
Long Beach, NY Based Nursing Home Beach Terrace Care Center urges members of the community to donate blood during Blood Donor Month.
Long Beach, NY (January 2014) Every year, millions of people donate blood to help others in times of emergency, often for many different reasons. Some donate for a relative or a friend in need, others just for the satisfaction of helping another. January typically proves to be a difficult month for blood donation due to inclement weather and seasonal illnesses, which cause less people to come out to blood drives. Additionally, January is after the holiday season, a time when people typically give more freely. Despite all the advancements in modern medicine, blood cannot be manufactured, therefore reaching possible donors is extremely important for saving the lives of millions.
When deciding to give blood, one should follow these simple steps for the best donation experience. First, when giving blood, it is possible to become dizzy from a drop in blood sugar. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice the night and morning before a donation and avoid dehydrating caffeinated beverages. Having food in your stomach also helps decrease light headedness, so it is advised to eat three hours before donation. During your donation, remember to relax. Bring a calming playlist or a book, something that only requires one hand to use. Finally, after your donation, be sure to have a meal high in protein to help your body replenish your blood supply. Remember to steer clear of alcoholic beverages for at least 8 hours post donation.
“Beach Terrace Care Center is proud to support the efforts of the Red Cross this month. Blood shortages have an enormous impact on many people not just throughout the Long Beach community, but across the country as a whole. We're encouraging anyone who is eligible to go out and donate blood at least once to help save lives,” said Beach Terrace Administrator Martin Zwick.
